As other users have noted, this is a quite good player with its very useful drag and drop feature, compared to Apple's iPod classic which ties you down (via itunes) to one pc at a time. But there's an apparent catch - Windows 7 see the Walkman without any adjustments, but for Win. XP computers to recognize it in Windows Explorer, you have to make sure your pc is updated to WMP 11. I have 2 computers with XP, and neither recognized it until I updated WMP (which I didn't otherwise use - WinAmp is better).

Also, compared to iPod classic, I was disappointed in the Walkman's maximum volume. It just doesn't crank, in my opinion. Maybe I listen to some music too loud, but I at least want that option. Still a good deal at one-third the price of Apple.

Great player
I bought two cheap players that were supposed to do more than the Walkman. One did not work at all. The second worked for about 15 minutes. The sony is a great little player. Very easy to load music. I can't beleave that the I-pod, over twice what I paid for the Sony could work any better. I use my Sony on my motercycle, play all day and still have battery. Amizon came through, good job.

Awesome player for the price and no messing with itunes
I love this player since I dont have to waste my time on stupid itunes stuff now. I can simply drag and drop files, put into any computer...just the way I wanted. Sound quality and battery life are really impressive. Highly recommended then ipod....

I have been using this for a year and it's quite durable and sounds very good. I treat it roughly for daily use putting in my bag and commute for 2 hours go and back almost everyday. But it didn't get even a scratch and still working perfectly. I am using rechargeable batteries for it, so I don't have to worry about the battery life and costs of them, and environmental friendliness. Since Sony Japan has already stopped making high end portable cd players, this is the highest model available in the market now. I have a few high end models of CD Walkman, but for a portable use, listening to music outside, sound quality of this is good enough, better than almost all mp3 players even listening to the same mp3 sources. You can encode your favorite CD's with lame insane 320 without worrying about its capacity limit. I recommend to use good headphone (HD25, ER4P, etc) with it and listing to your CD's, then it would be almost same as you are bringing out a decent audio set which may cost 100x more.

I'm 60+ and I've burned through I don't know how many Walkmans, but I hadn't owned one for at least fifteen years and didn't even realize they were still on the market (seems only on line, though). I have a couple of shoeboxes of cassette tapes that I could no longer listen to as I wandered around the yard walking with my cats or whatever. I was thinking of transferring them to CDs, but that seemed such an awesome task that I did some research and discovered, to my delight, that Walkmans are out there, they're still cheap, and the best price seems to be amazon's.

The Walkman is digital now, but it's still easy to operate, and although I guess I live too far from town to make use of the weather button, the couple of stations I like to listen to are available, albeit a little fuzzy-sounding. But I mostly got it to hear my old tapes again, and the megabass feature really enhances the sound.

What I wish was included was a clock, but no biggie, it's really about the music for me.

Works well. Incredible battery life!!
I just needed a plain old cassette player and there are very few options anymore. This Sony has worked out very well for me. I can't say there is anything special about it as a player. And it's actually annoying that it doesn't have auto-reverse. BUT... the battery life excellent!!

I have had this for 3 months and I listen to it for several hours practically every day... I have only had to change batteries once. And it only takes a single AA.

That in itself is a good reason to purchase it. Especially if you are only interested in the cassette player feature.

I was delighted to find that the walkman came with headphones and a case. So far, the walkman has worked flawlessly. So glad they still make a model with a tape deck!

Sony Walkman NWZS545BLK 16 GB Video MP3 Player (Black)

I had an iPod for the last 5 years, and was fairly happy with it because I was stupid. The build quality of my iPod was good, and their scroll wheel is probably still the best. Every other category gets crushed by Sony's walkman. A major reason that I wanted to switch mp3 players was my hatred for iTunes. I wanted a player where I could just drag albums similar to a USB drive, and it would work. No 3rd party software required. The Sony does this. I can't tell you how nice it is to be able to just move over entire directories of music with one drag. Not only that, but I can copy the music off the player in the same way, unlike all Apple products.

The screen is nice and bright and crisp. No problems there. FM tuner works great. What's really remarkable about this player is 2 very very very key things about mp3 players: battery life and sound quality. Sony really crushes Apple here. My player really does get 42 hours of playback. This is really unbelievable. Sometimes it's just nice to know that you can leave for a weekend trip with your mp3 player charged, and not worry about running out of juice no matter how much you use it. Anyone who enjoys music enjoys hi fidelity in the sound quality. I use earbuds so that I can hear everything at low volume while also blocking out all of the outside world. With these types of headphones, you really hear how much better and fuller the music is on a Sony than an iPod.

So, on top of the fact that this player is about 30% cheaper as well, I will probably only buy Sony's from here on out. Really a great product. A couple of things I don't particularly like though: speakers suck and I'm not too sure why they are even on this unit. Very strange, but this doesn't detract at all from what the device is actually used for. The other downer is the scroll wheel/play button combo. Significantly too small and just not a totally smooth interface. I find it hard to believe that anyone would prefer this over Apple's interface--which is what all of their products are known for: nice interfaces, ok hardware, wrapped in 73 layers of proprietary crap.

Great MP3 Player!
Sony makes some of the best products out there and this Mp3 Player is no exception. It has lots of memory and the battery life is one of the best out there.


Love it!
I searched for MP3 Players for awhile and when it came down to the features, memory, and compatibility, this one was the best. The reviews of this device also was a big deciding factor and everyone was right! I use it with Napster and it works absolutely flawless. 16 GB is plenty of memory for most uses unless you're a DJ. I personally cannot stand Apple, ITunes, etc. I had an Ipod before this and hated it. You IPhone people can have your 50 million different apps and 500 GB Ipods. Who really needs all that? If you like to keep it simple, this mp3 is for you. Great sound quality, ease of use, plenty of memory, works great, recommended!


Imporved over the 8GB model!
I originally had the 8GB model, but ran out of space recently and so upgraded to the 16GB. My new one has all of the good points of the old one:

1. Easy user interface
2. Stress-free connectivity to Windows PCs
3. Drag and Drop file management
4. Good sound fidelity
5. Easy playlist creation

I used an I-Pod a few years back and will never go back to one. The additional software hassles, the load said software and associated services puts on my PC, and arcane file nomenclature demand too much from the user. Plus the algorithm used by the unit to shuffle songs seems to play the same stuff.

Improvements over the 8GB unit:

1. Improved shuffling
2. I have a few podcasts of discussion groups and some of these run 90 minutes or longer. After powering off, the old unit would start the podcast from the beginning and I would have to FF to the point I left off; not real easy in the car. This new one stops all audio from the point you left off and begins at that point when you start again. Nice!
3. More space (duh!)
4. Much faster startup time.

One drawback of both units, and this cost them a star on my rating, was its video playback format. The screen isn't very big, so it isn't practical. Still, it would have been cool for it to be able to play more compatible formats.

Despite that small quibble, this is a great unit.

I bought about a week ago, and for the price, its a wonderful mp3 player. It's a very good (and cheap) alternative to iPods, which I don't particularly love. I also tried the Sansa clip (had two of them), which are even cheaper, but the quality, sound and interface are so cheap that the only way they would be worth it is if they were free. Sony sound quality has been always been great (I've enjoyed their CD players and headphones for quite some time now), and this player is no exception. Sound is awesome, and you can equalize it any way you want. It has a good interface and features. Mine didn't come with a CD, but the software was inside the player (software was worthless). The player works well with Windows Media Player (WMP) and Media Monkey. However, since WMP doesn't recognize AAC (m4a) files, you might want to stick to Media Monkey (it's free, easier to use and 1,000 times better than WMP). Photos look great and you can view them either in vertical or horizontal mode (since the screen is taller than it is wide). It is very slim and slick, and very modern looking.

I gave it 4 stars because I did run into some trouble while trying to set up the player.

1. Finding the software that would suit it best (finally Media Monkey) was a pain. Downloading Sony's own software was a waste of time.

2. I have 2 computers: a netbook and a desktop, both with Win XP. For some reason the player was not recognize by my desktop (which would have been better, so I would't have to take so much space from my poor netbook). Tried everything but nothing worked. Not sure what the problem was, but if I didn't have a second computer (netbook) I would have been screwed.

3. I haven't been able to play any videos. The format is very specific and, from what I've read, even if you do get to play some videos, the size and quality is not very good. I even try to use a free video converter and it didn't work. DONT BUY IT AS A VIDEO PLAYER!!!!!!!

Overall, its a great player for the money. Just remember to get Media Monkey and forget about playing videos in it. Oh, and get a screen protector, since it's very prone to scratches.

Give it a 'OK'
I bought this at a membership store a few days ago. The store offered a off coupon. This is my first MP3 player, so I can't compare it to others, but I find the sound excellent, and I haven't upgraded the headphones. In fact, I didn't think I'd like them, but so far, they're fine. I've been able to read everything on the screen with my old eyes, also a plus. The last review mentioned the instruction manual, and he's right, it's useless. It seems to be meant for someone who already is familiar with the product. I discovered on my own, out of sheer frustration, that sometimes a double click of the select button works. I also haven't been able to find a case for it. The best I could find so far is a cell phone case from Radio Shack. It has a gap in the right place for the headphone jack and has a belt clip, but I still have to take the player out to access any buttons. Everything else I looked at is too small or too large.


Cheaply made, great sound
Easy to use. Great organization and pleasant appearance. Sound quality is excellent for an mp3 of this price. Lightweight.
Material is cheap and cracks easily. Bottom half of the device is not the same color black as the top. But despite the cheap plastic and paint used, sound is great.


Excellent!!
The only problem is when you use the Fm Radio, the battery only has 13 Hours of Life!!

Sony 4 GB Walkman Video MP3 Player (Black)

I got this MP3 player about 2 years ago now, and it's still working as good as the day I took it out of the box. I've dropped it more times than I can remember and it's still kicking. Granted I have a nice silcon case on it, but still after two years of abuse for it to even be in one piece is amazing.I use this player everyday. Mostly to fall asleep to a book. The sound quality is excellent, and the battery life is the best of any I've ever owned. Sony rates it at about 24 hours battery life, just out of curiosity I let it play and it didn't die for well over 36 hours. I've not used this too much with video, honestly that's not what I got it for though. I mostly use it for audiobooks/music. It's very simple to load and remove songs. I ordered one of these for my dad, and he's not the most computer savvy person, and he has no problems with it. It's pretty much plug in, click, and go. The space on it is sufficient for me. I have 8 books on it at the moment(one of the books is 37 hours), as well as about 600 songs and still could fit some more.If you need a player for video, I'd opt for something more than 8gb, but for just music it's enough. The only downside I've ever found with this player is the innability to make playlists on the go. The player before this had that function and it was nice to be able to pic a playlist from my songs to fit my current mood, but that's a tiny issue. So all in all, I'd recommend this player to just about anyone.

Like it a lot
This is very easy to use. I had one and decided to get on for my husband. The software is easy and it holds a ton of music and video and pics. I only wish there were more functions for organizing music files and managing playlists.


Solid Performer
This thing is a work horse. I've have been using it heavily for 2 years now. Same strong charge, never freezes works perfectly. Use a silicone cover!

I recommend Sony Walkman mp3 players to all my friends and clients!

i really dont understand why it costs so much on amazon. its a really good mp3 player but i wasnt willing to spend that much on it. so i bought a refurbished one. it hasnt arrived yet but i know its good because i used to have one until it got stolen. (i guess thats how good it is). but i would definently recommend this to anyone, just not for .00. thats outrageous. but great overall.

I was concerned about purchasing this after the mixed reviews. I wasn't able to purchase a replacement sync cord through sony and lost mine in a recent move. I purchased this same item from different suppliers to ensure I would get one that worked. They all worked great. I do have the E436F Walkman which they no longer sell. This maybe the difference in my satasfaction with the product and others who gave the same item less than favorable reviews. In addition this cord came with addition equipment to charge the Walkman when away from home & a case that allows more protection for this model. I will however say the arm band that is included went straight into the trash.

The entire transcation was seemless...I recvd my item within a couple of days nicely packaged and as described. Was very pleased! and you couldn't beat the price!
