One of the first things I said to my loved ones when I told them I was expecting my first child was, "Please, don't get me any pregnancy books". I did receive Your Pregnancy Week by Week". It's great if you want a big list of Don'ts and want to be informed of everything that could go wrong in the next 9 months. I decided early on thta I wanted a completely natural birth. (Yeah, I guess I am a bit "granola" but part of the decision was entirely selfish. I just wanted to be able to brag about it.) My "BabyDaddy" and I interviewed a doula and she recommended this book. We immediately checked it out from the library (and renewed multiple times before purchasing). The book is directed toward the "birth partner" and I like the fact that it treats the reader as an intelligent individual capable of making their own decisions. Even if you don't plan on having a drug-free birth, this book provides clear/non-biased information on typical mother/baby procedures and pros and cons of each. It covers the most common methods of pain-relief (natural and chemical) and (cheesy) visuals with a handy chart for which works best when. It covers all of the tests you may have and what they are for. It's just a great source of information about the whole process and always keeps in mind that you're not sick, you're just pregnant. (P.S. Mission accomplished; me (with my sole birth partner, the "BD") had a successful all-natural birth and are now the happy parents of a 7 month old baby girl).

Wonderfully informative. Well arranged. I bought it when it became apparent my son-in-law might not be present for the birth of his first child. Giving birth has really changed since I last gave birth 27 years ago. I assumed the natural child birth movement that began around the time my children were born had continued. I had no idea that it had turned around. My daughter gave birth without any medical interventions and I don't believe she would have been able to do so if I hadn't first read this book. I knew what to expect and ways to respond. I must admit I forgot a great deal of what I read, but remembered enough to help me to help my daughter and son-in-law bring their beautiful daughter into the world. I highly recomend THE BIRTH PARTNER to anyone planning to be present at a birth.

This book is a wonderful, non-biased, non-political understanding of the birth process. Simpkin wrote this for the birth "partner" but it is truly wonderful information for mom, as well. Simpkin really covers all the aspects of childbirth and takes some of the fear out of childbirth for mommies and partners. A must have for first time parents to be.
Inspires confidence in my birth partner
My husband and I are expected our first, currently 33 weeks pregnant. We've been reading this book over the past week or so and it is a fantastic resource, really focused on what his role will be in the birth. It gives him a good idea of what to expect, affirms that he will be playing a vital role in the process, and is really helping him wrap his brain around what's going to happen in the last weeks of pregnancy, labor and delivery. We are planning a hospital delivery. My husband will be my birth partner, and my mom (a doctor) will also be present, playing more of the doula role. (This book would also be appropriate for those planning a home birth or those hiring a doula.)
