Cisco-Linksys E1000 Wireless-N Router

Monday, September 6th, 2010

I bought my E1000 to replace the Netopia 3347 provided by AT&T for our connection. We needed better QoS support than the Netopia could offer for our Vonage box and 3G microcell, so we "downgraded" the DSL modem to a Speedstream 5100 set up for bridged mode and bought the E1000 to use as a PPPoE router for us.

I should say up front that our needs are slightly unusual. We have a block of static IP addresses and a separate NAT router for our "inside" network. The devices on the "outside" network need addresses in that block to be served by a DHCP server, and I needed there to be no NAT or firewall in front of them.

This set of requirements befuddled other routers, but the E1000 was simple to set up for this configuration. I simply clicked two extra checkboxes to disable SPI and NAT after filling in the blanks to set up the DHCP server. It's refreshing that what amounts to an unusual configuration today was handled in stride, but given that this is a Cisco product, should not be that much of a surprise.

The only thing that hasn't worked 100% straight out of the box is the QoS setup. There is a setting to tell the router what your upload bandwidth is so that it can properly prioritize the packets. There is an "Auto" setting, but that doesn't appear to work properly. I wound up having to set it to manual and play with the numbers until I could see the latency stop going up on the high priority device(s) when I did a low priority bulk upload operation. It turns out that the right setting was the literal upload bandwidth of our DSL line (you'd expect to have to reduce this number by 20% or so to account for the overhead, but it appears that the router is doing this compensation for you).

I can't comment on the wireless aspects of the product - for me, the wireless is disabled, since I don't need it. And that, I guess, is the only other negative comment I might come up with - and it's not a knock against this product, but against the Cisco product line: there is no equivalent product that doesn't have wifi built-in. So you do have to pay for functionality you don't need. But the price is already so reasonable it's hard to complain too much.

The performance is excellent. With our DSL connection, our first-hop latency is just under 8 ms. That's the lowest I've ever personally encountered for a home Internet connection.

Great
Had to get technical assistance in setting up (never used before). No one has problems logging in their laptops. No problems with interference in home. Would recommend.

Easiest install ever
Easiest install ever. Open box, insert instruction cd into computer, plug in power (step 1), plug in modem cable (step 2), wait a few mins for auto-install to take place (step 3). Done. Been up and running for 2 weeeks without any problem.

Effortless
I have never had a wireless router before. Bought this after my cable modem was installed. Connected in 1 minute, ran the cd and was up and running in minutes. Have had no problems. Excellent signal, works on our 2 laptops and is frankly amazing. Not sure why people have had problems, but I just ran the cd and have been happy. I download music and stream netflix all over the house. Amazing!

Once you get it going, great.
Aside from the typical statistics already listed i'm going to tell you how easy it was to set up.
First off, don't waste your time using the included the CD. At one of the very first steps of setting up it came back as failed, even though all plugs were set up properly. The program also won't advance any further and just gives you a link to the customer support page. There is also no paper manual in the box, you'll have to go online if you need further assistance. It is good to connect a physical ethernet while installing incase you do need to use the internet for help. Their customer service had me on hold for 5 minutes and by that time i had figured it out myself.

Instead use the browser based utility by entering 192.168.1.1 into your browser. (everything must be connected at this point, obviously.) The first thing you will want to do is change the password. It does come already default password protected- but the password is quite obvious. Next I set up a simple MAC restriction to the mac addresses of all items within the household. (Iphone, computers, etc.) This should provide you with more than enough security against the everyday snooper/hacker. I'd also recommend finding a simple (free) password generator program, the first result on google is a very nice one. this was actually quite SIMPLE! just go straight to using the browser utility and you shouldn't have any problems.

Performance: I did notice a nice little increase compared to my 8 year old non-wireless linksys, (improved about ~500kbps on a ~6mb/s line, and slightly decreased latencys, but this is all subjective depending on time of day. For all i know it made zero difference.) I would not recommend buying new routers simply just to get better download speed unless you really have a need for a product like this. You also won't need a 10/100/1000 E2000 model unless you are paying for some insane download speeds. At which point you probably won't be reading this if you have money like that to burn. Great every day average consumer product for newbies and pros, with some good customization and an easy interface. They really hit their target market with this product.

Cisco-Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router

The product was password protected but once I found documentation on the Internet it mentioned that pressing a tiny reset button on the back would reset the device back to the factory setting. From there it was very easy to setup and it works great.

Wireless-G broadband router
Amazon.com Product Description:
Amazon.com Product Description The Linksys Wireless-G broadband router is really three devices in one box. First, it's a wireless access point, which lets you connect Wireless-G or Wireless-B devices to the network. There's also a built-in four-port full-duplex 10/100 switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices. Connect four PCs directly, or daisy-chain out to more hubs and switches to create as big a network as you need. Finally, the router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection.

To protect your data and privacy, the Wireless-G broadband router can encrypt all wireless transmissions, and it supports the industrial-strength wireless security of 802.1x authentication and authorization. The router can serve as a DHCP server, has NAT technology to protect against Internet intruders, supports VPN pass-through, and can be configured to filter internal users' access to the Internet. Configuration is a snap with the Web browser-based configuration utility.

With the Linksys Wireless-G broadband router at the center of your home or office network, you can share a high-speed Internet connection, files, printers, and multiplayer games with the flexibility, speed, and security you need!

Wireless-G is the 54 Mbps wireless networking standard that's more than four times faster than the widely deployed Wireless-B (802.11b) products found in homes, businesses, and public wireless hotspots around the country. But since they share the same 2.4 GHz radio band, Wireless-G devices can also interoperate with existing 11 Mbps Wireless-B equipment.

Because both standards are built-in, you can protect your investment in existing 802.11b infrastructure, and migrate to the new screaming-fast Wireless-G standard as your needs grow.

For more information on the differences between an access point and a router with access point, see the following table:

access point vs. router

See a comparison diagram of the different wireless technologies.

Wireless networks are rapidly becoming more popular and coming down in price. Since they don't require cables, you can use the devices anywhere in an office or home, even out on the patio. There's no need to roll out an Ethernet network cable to each room of a house; you can network anywhere--without wires. Outside the home, wireless networking is available in hotspots at coffee shops, businesses, and airports--great when you're on the road and need to get some work done. For convenience, wireless networking is the answer.

Which Wireless Standard Is Right for Me?
Now that you've decided to create a wireless network, the next step is to figure out which wireless standard to use.

Basically, a standard is a set of specifications for a device. All devices that follow a specific standard share operating characteristics, such as the radio frequency used and maximum data transfer speed.

For wireless networking, there are three standards to choose from at this time:

  • 802.11b
  • 802.11a
  • 802.11g

Features:
  • All-in-one Internet-sharing router, 4-port switch, and Wireless-G (802.11g) access point
  • Wireless data rates up to 54 Mbps--5 times faster than 802.11b
  • Shares a single Internet connection and other resources with Ethernet wired and Wireless-G clients
  • Interoperates with 802.11b clients at 11 Mbps

Not great with Macs
This camera loaded very well on my Mac, but I was not able to use the program that comes on the CD to setup the camera and it's features. I guess I am not tech savvy enough to do it by myself and needed the guidance of the camera setting program.

Almost great
This camera works pretty well and for the most part was easy to set up. However I could not get the motion detect e-mail function to work. I spent hours on the phone with tech services and they finally decided the camera was bad and that I should have Amazon replace it (which Amazon did promptly and efficiently). That however did not help my problem. I spent another hour or so with tech services and they forwarded me to the secondary tech (a day or so later). This tech let me know that AT&T (my DSL provider) has port 25 blocked (for safety?). He said primary tech support should know about that but clearly they did not. I went to AT&T and got them to unblock port 25 and that sort of solved the problem. The test e-mail works but the motion detection only works occasionally.

Setting up remote viewing was extremely easy as was all the rest of the set up (except motion detect e-mail). The picture is decent. If the motion detect e-mail worked this would be a 5 star product in my mind. I use it along with a self installed security system that dials me when entry is detected for when I am out of town. I have the camera and my router/modem on a UPS so that they work even if the electricity is out. When I am home, I can easily set it up to monitor the front door (or the back yard). Theoretically you can set up more than one camera to monitor multiple locations in the house.

The camera that I got only works on 2.4 gig wireless N. I would have preferred it to work on the 5 gig wireless N but I guess you can't have everything.

It works as advertised
What can I say, it works as advertised. Connected to my Mac, works. Connected to my Windows 7 HP, works. Connected to a Dell laptop running OpenSuse, works. Did not need to install a driver on any of the machines. Nice and easy.

Works great
I bought this to get a second ethernet port on my Mac mini, and it works great.

Works out-of-the-box with Ubuntu 10.04
Bought this adapter to stand in for a broken ethernet port on my laptop. Took it out of the package, connected it to a network cable and plugged it into a USB port on my laptop running Ubuntu 10.04 and it instantly connected. Works great! Very pleased.

Cisco-Valet Plus Wireless Router

Cisco-Valet Plus Wireless Router

I bought this in the hopes of solving the wireless network issues in my home. I had a basic Linksys wireless router that sometimes did not do the job and made it a hassle to set up new devises to my network. Let me admit up front that I am not a computer whiz. I saw a commercial for the Valet Plus and thought it was worth a shot. I have a bunch of wireless devises that I do not use due to network issues and if this could solve those problems, sweet!

The Valet Plus was super easy to set up although NOT quite as simple as advertised. I had my main computer connected to this new wireless network within 15 minutes. Directions to connect your DSL connection to the Valet Plus were easy to follow and if you have any questions or problems, their customer support can help you. I love that their customer support is U.S. based, very knowledgeable and eager to help. Actual customer service, imagine that? Next, you have to plug the included key (looks like a USB flash drive) into your computer's USB port. In 5 minutes or less you have a network name and password provided. You can easily change these if you do not want to use the automatically generated ones by simply going into your "Start" menu, clicking on "Cisco Connect" program, "Valet Setting" and then "Personalize." Here you can change the network name and password but remember that if you change them after connecting other devises to your network - you need to reconnect them using your changed info.

It was easy and now I looked forward to connecting other devises. I had my fingers crossed that the "Key" would easily connect devises to the network as promised. My first attempt was my Sony dash Personal Internet Viewer. Piece of cake! It recognized my network and prompted a password which this Valet Plus made easy. Waited less then 2 minutes for the connection to be made and My Dash was up and running! Under my old network, the connection was easily lost and a hassle to reconfigure so I didn't bother with the wireless features of My Dash. Next, my laptop. This was also very easy once you insert the Valet Key.

Once, I did loose connection to my computer but not any of the other devises connected to the network. A quick call to Valet customer service (1-877-500-8070) fixed the problem. I did find out that the Key was for computers only and they could not guarantee that it would work for anything else but I have found that if your devise has built in wireless connection and an USB port, it works.

I highly recommend this wireless network system. It made connecting printers, computers, laptops and other devises a breeze! I am sure my brother is happy I made this purchase too since I no longer bug him with networking issues. This Valet Plus has made my life much easier and combined with great customer service, well worth the price paid.

Easy setup concerned about range
Incredibly easy to set up. However, I had a WIFI product in the next room (Airport Express) and my streamed music was fading in and out. Only one drywall separated the two.

Much better than our previous router.
Our old router wouldn't allow wifi from the driveway or the back yard (where I often am with my son while he plays)...hooked up the new router, and BINGO! Good enough for my phone to not default to 3G. I also get a much stronger signal on my laptop than I did before (a strong four bars vs. a varying 2-3). Hubby said it was a breeze to set up as well--he was worried because there was no documentation included at all, but he said it was just plug and go.

Absolutely Incredible!
This product is the one router that you need!

I consider myself to be extremely technologically advanced, but I was having problems at home.

I bought two new computers this week, and was having serious difficulties getting everything networked.

I decided to upgrade my 4+ year old router, and went with the Valet Plus. I could not have possibly made a better decision.

In just 25 minutes, I had connected my entire house.

My home is two levels, and just under 4,000 square feet.

I connected 1 desktop (Win 7), 3 laptops (2-Win XP, 1-Win 7), 1 netbook (Win 7 Starter), 3 Xbox 360s (2-360 Elites, 1-360 slim), 1 Nintendo Wii, 1 Nintendo DSi, 1 Nintendo DSi XL, and 2 Android Phones (1-Samsung Moment, 1-EVO 4G).

I simply inserted the included flash drive into the first computer, and we were off to the races. I even changed my network name (SSID) and password after connecting the first computer. The setup was just amazing.

The speed in phenomenal, and my entire family is able to enjoy the connection.

Do yourself a favor and BUY THIS ROUTER!

A tip I picked up while doing research, keep your cable modem powered off until the absolute last minute. The flash drive will not boot, and it will tell you to check all of your connections. Plug the router up then, and hit the RETRY button. The installation will take less than 2 minutes, and each addition will be just as fast.

I am totally satisfied.

5 stars to Cisco-Lynksys WUSB600N!!!!!

Been having a huge problem with Dlink DWA 160 HW Ver B1 FW ver 2.00 adapter dropping wireless connection all the time (every 5 or 10 minutes), large downloads fail, web pages stop loading, etc. Using DLINK 655 wireless router. "Received Deauthentication Token", "wireless system with MAC address ... associated, wireless system with MAC address ... linked" entries endlessly in wireless router log. As an IT professional, decided to figure out and fix the problem. On the phone with tech support for hours and hours, no changes. Days on the web researching, lots of people with the same problem, but no fix. Tired of BS from vendors saying its "interference" or some other externel problem. Starting to look like a problem with the 802.11n specification.

Had to buy a new wireless adapter for daughter's computer, decided to try the Cisco-Lynksys WUSB600N, and following suggestions from others, inserted the adapter first, then manually selected the driver location onthe CD. Up and running in less than 2 minutes. PROBLEM WITH DROPPING SIGNAL COMPLETELY CURED. Not a single error in wireless router log for 2 days now, not a single dropped connection, downloaded 3GB file with absolutely no problem at all.

Cisco-Linksys WRT54G2 Wireless-G Broadband Router

I ordered this router on 5/25, and got it on 5/26 with one day shipping from Amazon Prime. Setup took a few minutes and was incredibly easy. It's very light and is small enough that it can be placed almost anywhere. I've had no problems with reception or performance. I've used it for wireless access with all sorts of gadgets: my laptop, a Wii, an iPod Touch, etc. It costs a little bit less than other routers, but it was definitely a good deal for the money.

Cisco-Linksys WRT54G2 G bnad router is a hit
I recently purchased this for my new apartment because the cable company informed me that they don't supply a router with their data package. After much research, I chose the Cisco-Linksys G Band router. I was going to opt for the N-Band. But decided against the purchase due to my apartment being small and my computer not beig N compatible. I'm glad that I went with the Linksys. You can't go wrong with this model.

I read the reviews some good some bad.

Cisco-Linksys WRE54G Refurb Wireless-G Range Expander

Cisco-Linksys WRE54G Refurb Wireless-G Range Expander

Unit performs as advertised. Boosted my wifi signal by at least 50% in the farthest reaches of my home. Allowed me to use my Ipod Touch (wifi) in my backyard (something I couldn't do before). Setup was easy as well.

Average Rating:
Brand: Cisco

Product Description:
Expand the range of your wireless home network. The Wireless-G Range Expander is the easy way to increase the effective coverage of your wireless network.

Unlike adding a traditional access point to your network to expand wireless coverage, the Wireless-G Range Expander does not need to be connected to the network by a data cable. Just put it within range of your main access point or wireless router. It is designed to "bounce" signals into those distant, reflective corners and hard-to-reach areas where wireless coverage is spotty and cabling is impractical. This "relay station" or "repeater" approach helps to build a wireless infrastructure and save wiring costs.

The Wireless-G Range Expander works with most Wi-Fi certified access points and wireless routers. And it works in with both Wireless-G and Wireless-B devices so you'll get the benefits of increased coverage even with a mixed network.

Installation is a snap with the Auto Configuration button. Just plug it in and press the button. The Expander is designed to find your wireless network and configure itself automatically.

Range expander works - but could be better
This product does indeed work, but how well is up for interpretation. I could not find any mfr. specification on exactly how much the range is extended with this device. I was hoping to get a signal to an outbuilding, but was disappointed. I was able to get the expander to work inside my house and was able to notice a definite improvement in signal strength, as measured on my laptop, from one end of my two-story house to the other, and upper story to lower story. I had to rely on my knowledge of networks, not the installation instructions, to get the device up and running--thus the 3-star rating.

Surprised by customer support
I read reviews from several sites and they all said basically the same thing: This thing works most of the time, IF you can set it up. So, I printed some directions from a forum where several people got it working and I gave it a whirl.

They didn't work. Not even close.

And (of course) neither did the disc. So, I tried something novel. I called tech support. Lots of review bemoaned the awful tech support, but I waited about 3 minutes and got to speak to Lloyd. He acted as if this was the 200th time today he'd gotten a call on this product, and it probably was. So he politely asked it he could remotely access my PC. We set up a session and he configured the expander for me. Done in 10 minutes.

So, kudos to Linksys/Cisco for the support. If you're wondering what he did, he assigned a static IP to my TCP/IP (192.168.1.50) and then connected directly the the expander. He changed the broadcast channel and set the SSID to match my router. And that was it. (I had already stripped off all security.) After he finished and it was working I went back and turned on security and changed the SSID on my router and then made the matching changes on the expander. In order to make those (or any) changes to the expander you'll have to be hard wired to it (there's a port on the front) and retain your static IP on your computer.

Yes, believe every word about the difficulty of setting it up. And yes, throw the provided disc away or use it as a coaster. And yes, swallow your tech-pride and call support and let them do it for you.

Review of Linksys WRE54G
Linksys WRE54G is the best device in its category! Range is broad and its fast. Weaknes is that it does not have the N-mode. Setup is easy if the main default Gateway on the Wireless router is based on 192.168.0.1

I'm a computer tech and I always use this router for my customers and I have no problems with this router at all, except it has weak range, I mean you can only use it inside home. Other words if you wanna make your nieghbors share your wifi, then you need extended range. But I really recommend this router for those who need it only for home use, playstation and some other devices.

Difficult setup, good performance
Powerful rooter. I spent 3 days in setting it up because of issues with my European laptop (HP). Now it works perfectly!
