Acomdata Samba USB 2.0 3.5-inch IDE/SATA Hard Drive Enclosure SMBXXXU2E-BLK (Black)

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

I needed a USB drive enclosure so I could easily move data off an old (dead) machines hard drive. This was much more convenient than installing the older, slower drive in my new machine.

The AcomData serves this purpose really well. Installation is a very simple process involving only a few screws on the case, lift away a metal enclosure and you have standard SATA connectors. Nice touches include extra screws for holding the drive in place and a physical power-switch that allows the unit to be switched off without unplugging the USB or power cables. I did not try the software because my OS recognised and worked with the drive without it.

The unit does look a little eccentric compared to the sleek look of most external HDD these days.

Overall, very happy with this unit. It did exactly what it said it would on the box...

not the top of the line
    Instructions are minimal.
Had to disassemble and reassemble twice.
Pictures are inaccurate and not applicable.
Dont know how long it will last, others have had those problems.
    Hope I'm luckier.

    Seems to be a keeper
Seems to be running pretty good so far. I put a 400 gig HD in there and it's pretty quiet. Works fine in Win 7, no problems. I've been throwing a lot of data back and fourth with no problems. I don't let it run 24/7, I turn it off when I'm not using it.

    Nice Enclosure
This is a nice enclosure with a lot of options for drive connectivity. I like the fact that is has an external power switch for turning the drive on or off. Sturdy metal shell. My only concern is with the drive tray/connectors assembly; it seems a little flimsy. I use this when working on customers machines and transferring data so I am constantly switching out drives. This wear and tear on the drive tray and connectors especially will eventually lead to a failure, no matter how careful you are. If you are going to be installing a drive into the enclosure and never taking it out then this is a great choice.

Acomdata USB 2.0 2.5-Inch SATA Hard Disk Enclosure HDEXXUP-240-BLK (Black)

Like other users said about the bad screws, I have to agree.

    I would recommend a #0 phillips.
I used a #00 phillips and stripped one screw. Had to use some creative work to remove it.

Tips for those who only have a #00, PRESS DOWN HARD before you unscrew it.
The first one i stripped i didn't push down hard enough,
the second one i stripped a little bit (maybe 1-2 rotations) but it came out with much needed pressure.

Other than the problem above, pretty easy to use. Not for those who are planning to swap hdds in and out of this enclosure.

    Nice Little Enclosure!!
Nice Little Enclosure. Only complaint is that i had to buy a screw driver that was small enough. would have paid a couple more dollars for it to come with one.

It does a great job dissipating heat. I took the time to put a couple of rubber feet on the bottom to help with air flow.

    Excellent enclosure
Simple. I had an extra laptop hard drive. Got this case to use it as a backup. Two screws opened the end; the drive plugged in perfectly, closed up and it works fine. Looks excellent. The drive needs 1 amp, and a USB port is limited to 0.5 amp, so you have to use the supplied "two-headed" cable. This enclosure exceeded my expectations. My wife thinks it looks great too.

    Great value for the $$$
This is a nice piece of packaging. Slim, quiet, radiates heat quite nicely. I bought two of them and have been very happy with them.

Pros: excellent value, good-quality aluminum case

Cons: the tiny screws required a trip to Home Depot to get a set of precision screwdrivers to find one with a small enough bit to open the case. An included screwdriver would be nice.

    Bad quality screws
The screws came too tight and of bad quality (the head got damaged by trying to loose it). I managed to get 3 of 4 loose and had to break one of the plastic end cover to be able to enclose the disk. It is working though.

Acomdata Tango USB 2.0/eSATA 2.5-Inch SATA Hard Drive Enclosure TNGXXXUSE-BLU (Blue)

I've owned a few other hard drive enclosures but this one is simply the best I've had so far.

I'll begin with installing your drive in the enclosure which is really easy. First you remove 2 screws from one of the end plates so you can slide out the internal board which you attach your drive to. You then lay your drive onto the board, slide it into the SATA connector, and use 4 screws (which are included with the enclosure) to secure the drive to the board. Lastly, you slide the board with the drive back into the enclosure and screw the end plate back on. Securing the drive to the board like this is a fantastic feature. One of my other enclosures did not have this which meant the drive would move around inside of the enclosure. The drive I used in that enclosure ended up failing on me. Since hard drives can be susceptible to shock damage, securing the drive to the board like this is a big plus.

Using this enclosure is also really simple. It comes with a USB 2.0 cable or you can buy an eSATA cable if you want higher transfer speeds. (I use this cable with mine: eSATA to eSATA Cable) If you use USB 2.0, keep this in mind: you need 2 free USB ports. This unit comes with a mini-USB to USB Y-cable. As in, one end has a single mini-USB connector and the other end has 2 USB connectors. You connect the mini-USB end to the enclosure and the other 2 USB connectors to your computer. I believe one connector is used for power and the other is used for data. Also, if you use eSATA, you will still need the USB cable!! The drive will not power itself off of the eSATA connection, so you will still need to connect one of the USB cables to power the drive. (This is how I have to do things with my laptop. Whether or not this is true for desktops or other laptops I don't know.)

I'd also like to note how well-built this enclosure is. The hard drive fits snugly in the enclosure and stays put. Because of how the drive is mounted (which I mentioned above) there aren't any rattling noises or any movement of the drive within the enclosure. The metal housing of the enclosure is really tough and hasn't scratched or chipped at all after being jostled around in a backpack for a few months. The markings on the case are also perfect and haven't scratched or chipped.

Overall I would say this is a fantastic enclosure, especially given the low price. The cabling situation may be a bit tedious at first but I wouldn't let it discourage you from buying this product!

Acomdata 2.5" Tango USB/eSATA Hard Drive Enclosure Kit
When the motherboard on my old laptop quit working, I thought I had lost everything on that computer forever. My husband did some research and found this enclosure kit for my old hard drive to connect it to my new computer.

The actual installation of my old hard drive into the enclosure was difficult because the instructions sent with it are EXTREMELY vague. I went online and was able to find someone else's instructions to follow and it was a breeze! Once I connected the enclosure to my new computer, the necessary driver was automatically installed and in a very short amount of time, I was able to access the information that I thought I had lost when my old computer died. This device has been a wonderful asset to me because I highly valued the pictures, documents, and presentations that are on my old hard drive. I am now using it as a back-up drive for my new computer. I have been very satisfied with my purchase!

Great! High Quality, but watch the instructions :P
I got this HDD enclosure for my old laptop HDD and I must say it is very good. The main body is made of aluminum, while the two ends, sturdy plastic. It's very sleek, and if you look closely on the plastic ends there are small metal ventilation holes, which I found to be both aesthetically appealing as well as good for keeping the HDD cool. My only complaint is the incorrect instructions - a previous review had mentioned this before, so follow his/her instructions - the included installation guide is completely incorrect :P Very good for the price and I'd recommend it to anyone in need of a giving a HDD a new life :)

does what I need it to do

AcomData PureDrive 1 TB USB 2.0/eSATA External Hard Drive PHD10000USE-72

    Monday, September 28th, 2009

I've owned a lot of hard drives over the years, and this 1TB unit from acomdata has to be my favorite.
    Let me count the ways.

    - It's small, much smaller than the competition

    - It has a nice clean shape that stacks easily, not the weird curves and bulbs of some drives

    - It runs very cool and very quiet

    - It handles power cycling well --- it sleeps when it's not in use, and wakes up when it's needed, without balking. (You might think this is trivial, but I've had multiple drives from other vendors that have a 10% chance of hanging themselves when they wake from sleep.)

    - It delivers the performance I expect (over USB 2, so not great, but what can you do). I don't have an eSATA port, so I can't comment on its eSATA performance.

    - Really, my only complaint is that I wish it included an FW800 port

One more thing. When I bought this, it was the only drive at the time that was smart enough to include correct instructions for how to format the drive for a Mac (which involves a non-obvious process of changing the partition type from MBR to GUID). All the competitors either did not care about mac, or were too stupid to include a slip of paper in their box explaining this procedure --- they'd rather eat the tech support calls and returns. This indicates to me a company slightly more "with it" than their competition.

I've had this drive what, over two years now, and it continue to delight me --- the one drive in my sea of drives that has never once given me reason to complain.
I see a few people complaining that their drives failed, and I don't know --- maybe I was lucky, or maybe the manufacturer switched from WD to Seagate drives as the internal drive? All I can say is that the model I bought, quite some time ago, is fantastic.
